Ps 40 is a thanksgiving psalm. God reminded me of His faithfulness and my desperate need of His help. The psalm says, “[I am] afflicted and needy… Do not delay, O my God.” (Ps 40:17a,d, NASB) This psalm has a special place in my being because God gave this psalm to me during my recovery.
In 2013, God completed many deep spiritual surgeries and delivered me from many emotional and spiritual strongholds. Whenever I read this psalm, it’s always as though my “delivered” life flashes quickly before my eyes. This psalm gave me the language to explain God’s work in my life. He, not only pulled me out of the pit, He established my feet and my steps.
This verse taught me that God is a generous God. In a sense, He is a God who voluntarily walks the extra mile. Verses 9 to 11 taught me to share my testimony since it is God’s story in my life.
Because my heart continues to fail me like what verse 12a declares, I plead and run towards God. The Message paraphrase provides language to something that this psalm has etched in my soul,
“And me? I’m a mess. I’m nothing and have nothing: [my God] make something of me [for Your glory].”
